01.6.06 Barcelona Regions and Cities: Europe, go Urban - Now or Never!  [EN]

..."The Devil is in the Details" - Ms. Hübner, at the invitation of Parkinson, explained, that, although the framework of the budget is fixed by Council- and Parliament decisions, there are still openings left for a better position of cities in the new programmes. Under subsidiarity, the impulse has to come up from "below", from the regions and the cities themselves, within the ongoing elaboration process of the details of the programmes. In July, she expects, final decisions on those "details" will have to be taken. Up to that moment, many initiatives are still welcome. [...]

British Academy for Sustainable Communities (ASC): A strong vision - no innovation, yet.

...ASC can be seen as a complement to URBACT and EUKN European knowledge- and knowledge-capitalisation work. (See also our journal-post on ASC's programme: "A strong Vision - no innovation, yet") The cross-sectoral competences of urban practitioners are an absolute must for doing this work. In practice, well trained specialists in, for instance, urbanism, have to acquire many other skills (administrative, social, economic, etq.) to succeed as a project manager in urban (re)development. In the academic world, the non-specialist (wholistic) specialism of urban community project managers, is not (yet?) accepted as a scientifically valuable approach. There is no scientific basis for our work,....

Integration: Opportunities ahead for Boosting it within your urban Projects. New EU Funding and more intercity Networking initiatives

So here is why the cities come in as the best (and only) channels to make an extra European funding work. And, being practical people in the first place, how can we help our own local authority to weigh in on the new EU-generated opportunities? We should stimulate existing European urban networks for integration policies, as we each try to mobilise our own city from our workplace. Is an integrational aspect present in your project, or can it shortly be planned, that needs extra funding? Is your city participating in an existing network, as there are within Eurocities, URBACT (UDIEX-ALEP, Citiz@Move and Regenera), or, could it maybe answer favourably to the invitation of the city of Stuttgart for a new Urban Integration Policies Network?
